Pump Up Those Tyres!

 

Your tires are like your car’s fancy dancing shoes—they’ve got to have a good grip. You’ll face the wrong way on the dancefloor without the proper grip! So, give your tires some attention:

Check the pressure in all your tires, including the spare, and make sure they’re inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (usually listed in the driver’s door arch).

Measure the tread depth; it should be more than 1.6mm to keep you safe on the road.

Inspect the tire sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or any signs of damage. If they look worse for wear, it’s time to invest in some fresh rubber!

 

Brake It Down!

Do you know what’s a total buzzkill? Brakes that don’t work, especially when you’re sharing the road with South Africa’s abundant wildlife!

 

Here’s a quick brake check you can do:

• Examine your brake pads and discs. If they show signs of wear and tear, it’s time for a visit to a brake specialist.
• Check your brake fluid level; the reservoir should have a clear marker for the correct level. If it’s low, top it up and have an expert inspect for any leaks.
• And, of course, keep an eye out for any unwanted “floaty bits” in that liquid—we don’t want those floating around like they don’t care!

 

Fluids Galore!

Your car is a thirsty beast, and it relies on various fluids. Before hitting the road, give them a thorough check:

• Engine oil, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid all deserve a look. If you’re unsure of where to find them under the hood, consult your car’s manual.
• Battery Bliss!
• You don’t want your car’s battery to give up in the middle of your trip, so give it some attention:
• Check for corrosion on the battery terminals and ensure they are securely in place.
• Make sure the battery is firmly fastened.
• If your battery is showing its age (over three years old), it might be time to take it to your nearest battery specialist for recycling.

 

No Lights not smart!

Lights are essential, and it’s not just impolite if they don’t work; it’s dangerous! So, check them all:

• Test your exterior lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights, and indicators. Ensure they’re shining brightly.
• Don’t forget those interior dashboard lights; they need some care too!
• Belt it Out and Hose it Down!
• Your car has some fancy belts and hoses under the hood, so give them a once-over:
• Ensure all the hoses are in pristine condition with no visible damage.
• Belts tend to fray with age, while hoses might loosen at the joints. A quick tightening might do the trick!

 

Climate Control!

We know South Africa can get scorching, so make sure your AC is ready to chill when you are. And remember to give your heater a little love, just in case!

 

Wipe It Good!

Visibility is everything! Don’t let old wipers rain on your parade:

• Ensure they’re not splitting or flaking.
• If they leave streaks on your windshield, it’s time for a wiper replacement.
• And make sure those washer sprayers are doing their job too!
• Be Prepared for Anything!
• Accidents happen, so be ready for anything:
• Keep a roadside emergency kit on hand; you’ll be a road trip superhero!
• And don’t forget the top three emergency contact numbers: 10111 for emergencies, 112 for cellphone emergencies (with GPS triangulation!), and 10177 for ambulances. Provide them with all the necessary details!
